A QR CODE TO LINK DIRECTLY TO YOUR POISON DART FROG'S LINEAGE INFORMATION ! Welcome to The Oophaga Ledger This is the breeder's ledger; a day-by-day and month-by-month journal documenting each time an Oophaga froglet is removed from its parental enclosure. This journal is for Fern's Frogs® Oophaga genus/species froglets only . These notes serve as ongoing lab records and insights for dedicated Oophaga breeders. If you’re an Oophaga keeper and want to chat about “What’s On Deck ,” feel free to contact . Fern's Frog's complete collection (Dendrobates, Phyllobates, Ranitomeya, Oophaga) : "Our Breeders " ASK Chat GPT about Fern's Frogs® or about your own dart frog(s) What is an Oophaga pumilio "Cemetery " Bastimentos I do not label my offspring as such. I breed 8 paired Bastimentos are here at Fern's Frogs set with unrelated pairs including - 4 pair of "Gold Dust". Read more about "Gold Dust" below. Natural Habitat: They are found, specifically, in and around a "Cemetery" located on Isla Bastimentos in Bocas del Toro, Panama. They originate from the forests near this cemetery on Bastimentos Island, often found in areas near Red Frog Beach. Color Variability: Unlike many other pumilio populations, Bastimentos are highly polymorphic, with offspring displaying a wide array of colors regardless of parent color. The Bastimentos population is a perfect example of color polymorphism, meaning individuals can have different colorations despite belonging to the same species. Common Colors: The "Cemetery" locale is often dominated by shades of orange frogs, but also includes red, yellow , and gold variations, with a few other colors appearing with less frequently such as green and off white. A good read for all reptile and amphibian hobbyists: "The Lizard King" by Bryan Christy (ISBN -10-:0-446-58095-3) What is an Oophaga pumilio "Gold Dust" Bastimentos Answer: It is NOT a locale and likely began making their way "in" with all the Bastimentos in the early to mid 1990s Gold Dust Line Breeding : Captive bred 'Gold Dust' lines are bred to increase the % of this color occurrence in their offspring in captivity. In captivity, a true 'Gold Dust' is said to breed gold dust coloration in greater than 85% of the pair's offspring ( i.e. Ferns Frogs from breeder pairs 4, 5, 7, 8). When in doubt, there is no drawback to pairing two unrelated 'colors' and simply seeing what they produce. Note: breeding a minority color morph to a majority color morph would still occur in the wild—just less often—because fewer minority animals exist to begin with. Since those minority animals still breed within their local population, a minority-to-majority pairing isn’t far from the natural average. What is highly unlikely in nature is a very small minority breeding with another small minority (such as gold dust × gold dust). The possibilities alone make this color more rare. As well, studies show that pumilio tend to seek out brighter mates—with gold dust being less bright and less aposematic than orange, yellow, or red. Therefore, this points to same-minority pairings (gold dust × gold dust or any low% × low% combination) being unnatural in the wild—not impossible, but much less likely. OOPHAGA Froglets oow (out of water) December 2024- Current Upon completion of metamorphosis, Oophaga froglets are removed from the rearing/parental enclosure without delay. Juveniles are maintained for an initial period of 1–3 months in a controlled, simplified environment (“neonate bin”) to reduce stress and facilitate consistent feeding. Following this stage, froglets are transferred to structured grow-out enclosures where they remain for approximately six months prior to transfer of ownership. Expert record keeping at Fern's Frogs. Poison Dart Frog lineage and breeding information for buyers. UUID database is maintained for each frog that is bred by Fern's Frogs. Passing Along Proper Husbandry FootPrints™ Do you know who bred your poison dart frogs ? Do you know how old they are? Do you know lineage information? Link to the Roots Keep it traceable Data entry has started. It's a huge project. Please stand by as records are updated and added We strongly encourage responsible stewardship among other keepers to ensure irreplaceable wild genetics remain as true as possible in the captive breeding setting for future generations of breeders and hobbyists. Research needs to be done PRIOR to acquisition and breeding. This is especially true for Pre-CITES lineage / legacy hobby lineage and newly "imported " locales of Oophaga pumilio. Fern's Frogs has handed out 3000 UUID cards; one for every dart frog purchased since 2014. Moving forward, the lineage infromation will be published here. A QR code will be used to acccess this information. The UUID database will continue privately. Please stand-by as Fern's Frogs makes this transition as we maintain a very large breeding collection; this an emormous amount of information. FootPrints™ — Digital Lineage Access Same Commitment ….. Smarter Delivery Fern’s Frogs is transitioning from individual handwritten ID cards to a QR‑code–based FootPrints™ system. When you purchase a dart frog bred Fern’s Frogs® simply scan the QR code on the business card provided at purchase to access that frog’s lineage information on our website. FootPrints™ remains our mark of origin and our commitment to responsible, transparent captive breeding. What WAS the FootPrints™ card? FootPrints™ is and will remain Fern’s Frogs® internal unique identification and lineage‑tracking system for each poison dart frogs bred by the sole breeder. This will continue without cards. Every frog bred by Fern’s Frogs is assigned a unique identifier once it is out of water (OOW). This identifier connects that individual frog to verified lineage records maintained by us, for our records. Since 2014, every Fern’s Frogs offspring has been entered into this system. This will continue for our records. What’s Changed? Instead of a handwritten ID card for each frog: You’ll receive a business card with a QR code at the time of purchase. Scanning the QR code brings you directly to the FootPrints™ lineage page on our website. This allows us to maintain accurate, centralized records while reducing physical cards and duplication. What has NOT changed: FootPrints™ still represents Fern’s Frogs® verified captive breeding. Lineage tracking remains a core responsibility of our breeding program. What Information Will Be Included When A Dart Frog Purchase Is Made On the Frog’s Container (at purchase, nothing will change): Genus Species Locale OOW (Out of Water) date On Our Website - On the 'Roots' page (Lineage Data Entry ( or via QR code): Lineage information of the parents Breeder‑maintained records tied to that specific frog’s offspring Historical data preserved for future reference This system is designed to follow the FROG, not the buyer. Privacy & Scope No personal buyer information is stored in any of our ‘private’records. Except for published lineage information, the breeder's private FootPrints™ database is not public. Our private data exists solely to track captive‑bred frogs and preserve lineage integrity to ensure continuity of responsible record‑keeping. Why Lineage Matters Maintaining lineage records is a minimum responsibility when breeding poison dart frogs in captivity. FootPrints™ serves as: A mark of origin A guarantee of captive breeding A tool to support ethical breeding decisions Our goal is to encourage these same practices throughout the dart frog community, reinforcing proper husbandry, mentorship, preserve genetic diversity, and long‑term sustainability of captive bred dart frogs. Occacionally a "Guest Breeder" will accompany Fern's Frogs at an expo. Lineage information within the FootPrints™ is for dart frogs bred ONLY by Fern's Frogs. Guest breeders inlvited to vend at an expo are experienced and will be willing to share lineage information with a buyer. Contact Us - Your thoughts matter to Fern's Frogs

Large selection of captive bred Poison Dart Frogs for sale at Fern's Frogs. Experienced breeder. Available via appointments and tri-state area expos. Fern's Frogs Poison Dart Frog Breeding The sole breeder at Fern’s Frogs is a recognized poison dart frog breeder located in Huntington, NY, and has been active since 2010, maintaining a well-established collection of poison dart frogs and specializing in U.S. captive breeding for other breeders, collectors, and hobbyists. Let’s start by answering an important question: Who are “poison dart frog breeders”? Becoming a recognized breeder of poison dart frogs in the United States is a meticulous endeavor that requires dedication, expertise, and a deep commitment to conservation. These breeders are passionate individuals who immerse themselves in the intricate world of amphibians, specializing in the care and propagation of these vibrant and potentially deadly creatures. To attain recognition, breeders must demonstrate a profound understanding of the frogs’ complex biology, including their unique dietary needs, habitat requirements, and breeding behaviors. They meticulously monitor environmental conditions to replicate the frogs’ native habitats, ensuring their health and well-being. Moreover, recognized breeders play a crucial role in both educating the public about these fascinating creatures and contributing to vital conservation efforts, ultimately safeguarding these remarkable species for generations to come. Their dedication to excellence and their critical role in preserving biodiversity make them invaluable contributors to maintaining poison dart frog populations bred in captivity. Fern’s Frogs is dedicated to providing healthy and well-cared-for poison dart frogs. We prioritize the care and proper husbandry of our frogs, never compromising their well-being for the sake of quantity. We do not engage in wholesale sales and carefully manage the production of offspring. Each dart frog bred at Fern’s Frogs has been assigned a unique identification number using our FootPrints Lineage UUID generator between 2014-2026. Beginning in 2026 this information is published here. At Fern’s Frogs, we take pride in the quality of our breeding and in maintaining proper husbandry practices. All the photos on our website showcase either our breeders or offspring, all of which have been carefully raised by the owner of Fern’s Frogs in a controlled and safe environment. We do not purchase frogs for resale. We are dedicated to upholding the highest standards of care for all the frogs in our care. All photos on our website have been taken by us and accurately depict the health and well-being of the frogs we offer for sale. As a respected and experienced poison dart frog breeder, we understand the importance of providing proper care and nutrition for froglets during the crucial early stages of their development. Depending on the species, our froglets are raised in smaller, carefully planned environments for 3–8 months, where they are given a rotation of high-quality nutritional supplements and a variety of feeders to ensure a smooth transition to their new homes. At Fern’s Frogs, we take the sale of our offspring very seriously and reserve the right to deny any dart frog sale if we feel it is not in the best interest of the frog. Fern’s Frogs routinely has a large and varied selection of captive-bred offspring for sale throughout the year. Displaying separate photos for every available offspring is not possible, but requests for photos prior to a potential purchase are encouraged. Dart frogs are available for purchase during a visit to Fern’s Frogs or at a NY Metro area expo . Please feel free to ask for references—we encourage requesting as much information as possible.
